Birthday Cupcakes--Test Run

I'm baking cupcakes for C's birthday party next weekend. I will be making chocolate cupcakes with vanilla buttercream (using the recipe here) and yellow cupcakes with chocolate frosting (per the birthday boy's request).

Tonight I tested the yellow cake/chocolate frosting recipes. I used the 1234 Yellow Cake and Chocolate Satin recipes from Joy of Cooking.

Verdict?



Cute, but eh. The yellow cake was a little too angel-foody and not quite yellow. I'm going to try the Golden Cake recipe instead. The frosting was a bit too glaze like and a bit grainy. I may have to make a chocolate buttercream instead.
